DALE stands for Dynamic Alternate Learning Environment. Head of Campus, Salina Mayall, spoke to BFX about the school’s furniture choices for their new, state-of-the-art building.

Fortitude Valley State Secondary College (FVSSC) is Brisbane’s first state high school to be built in inner-city Brisbane in over 50 years, adopting a vertical design solution to reflect its urban setting. FVSSC is a flagship, future-focused educational facility, serving the growing communities in Brisbane’s inner city north. The first stage of the new FVSSC was opened in 2020 to Year 7 students. The second stage was opened in 2021 welcoming Year 7 and 8 students. By 2025, FVSSC will have capacity for 1,500 students from Years 7-12.

See the new Nundah State Primary Grade 4 Classroom created with BFX 3D Roomplanner. Karen O’Connell, Grade 4 Teacher, shares her experience with the BFX 3D Room Planner in an exclusive interview. With glowing consent and enthusiasm from Principal Deb Cox, and with help from the BFX team, she was able to start the journey. The students were broken up into 7 groups and worked in teams to design their dream classroom using the BFX 3D Room Planner. Learning how to use the technology was just one of the activities around classroom design they did. Their teacher took them through different kinds of activities such as creating vision boards, drawing 2D floor plans, and writing proposals and speeches to present to the class. The whole project engaged students from start to finish and the skills they demonstrated stretched across Maths, Design & Technology, English, Art and even Science. Shelly O’Sullivan, Grade 6 Teacher at St. Nicholas in Tamworth, shares her experience with BFX Furniture in an exclusive interview. Initially, we had the parents come in to look at the design, and we had the architects and our project manager address them. The fabulous thing about the architect’s work is that they presented a 3D model where we could virtually walk through these spaces and I think that was key in getting many of the parents on board.

BFX Furniture’s Indigenous Participation Initiative captures our commitment to diversity and enables opportunities for First Nation people within, and together with, our business. To mark the beginning of our journey we are launching the BFX Indigenous Fabric Collection–The Ninderry Range (after the home of BFX).
A unique range of commercial fabrics designed by Indigenous artists that celebrate culture, connect with and gives back to the community. Each hand painted design is licensed with royalties paid directly to the artists. Paintings are reproduced on sustainable, recycled commercial fabrics that are milled and printed in Australia. We acknowledge and respect Australia’s rich heritage and the practice of sharing stories of country through the culture of art. Understanding the individual artists’ stories and the symbolism in their artwork was an important part of the process. It has been a great honour to develop these artworks into fabrics. We have taken care to communicate the story shown in these fabrics, while increasing awareness and interest in Indigenous culture. This is at the heart of our Initiative.
To see these artworks applied to furniture that will be seen across our country and internationally in schools and businesses is really quite remarkable. We are honored to be supporting Indigenous Australian artists while immersing ourselves in Indigenous culture now and into the future.
